Easy Rules: Pronouncing S Like Z

The letter S can sound different depending on the word. Sometimes it sounds like /s/ (soft hissing, like in sun), and sometimes like /z/ (buzzing, like in zoo). Let’s look at the easy rules!

Remember:
/s/ = soft hissing (like in sun)
/z/ = buzzing (like in zoo)
– For plurals, the sound depends on the last sound of the base word.
– The sound of S can change if it’s at the beginning, middle, or end of the word.

1. Plural after voiced sounds → /z/

Voiced sounds = vibration in your throat (b, d, g, v, l, m, n, r, vowels).

👉 Tip: Put your hand on your throat. If it vibrates, it’s voiced.
dogs – /dɑːɡz/ → The dogs are barking.
pens – /penz/ → The pens are new.
cars – /kɑːrz/ → The cars are fast.

2. Plural after voiceless sounds → /s/

Voiceless sounds = no vibration, just air (p, t, k, f, θ).

4. S between vowels → usually /z/

5. At the beginning of a word → usually /s/
